The Charge is a five day experience currently taking place in Chicago. Throughout the week we will look at what goals you want to accomplish professionally, personally and analyze what roles you want to have in your community. Each day at The Charge men are given tasks to complete in the city of Chicago. Similar to the NBC show, The Apprentice, participants are given a budget, objectives they need to meet and a time frame to complete each task. The week concludes by completing a five year personal, strategic plan. You will also have time to sit down one-on-one with an alumnus from Delta Tau Delta who is a leader in his own industry. They will provide feedback on your plan and help you examine how the Fraternity can help you reach your goals. What you just read was the description of The Charge (http://www.delts.org/the-charge) provided Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity. This summer I was fortunate enough to be able to attend The Charge and can tell you that while the above synopsis is completely true, the impact this conference had on me as a professional, as a citizen, and as a person can't be put into words. But that won't stop me from trying anyway. As a member of Delta Tau Delta the Mission and Values of our Fraternity are incredibly important to me and my everyday life, it's part of the reason I chose to serve as our chapter's Guide, but The Charge offers an individual the chance to realize what other values are important to them as a person and how to incorporate those into your life. For example, some of my top values include self-actualization, fulfillment, and developing others, and are the inspiration for me to not only figure out my self-identity, but to help others find their own. Delta Tau Delta consists of men who choose to live the Fraternity's Mission and Values, but The Charge asks each attendee to live their own. Why is this important though? Can't you do this on your own? Possibly. But The Charge also gives a member the opportunity to meet brothers from across the nation, speak with alumni with years of experience, and push themselves to their fullest potential. This experience, albeit it was only five days, provided me with brotherhood and connections that I hope stand the test of time (and distance). I can tell you about the struggles of James Washburn, a member of the Crescent Colony at the University of Louisville and former Marine, and the ambitions of Diego Montoya, who attends Western Illinois University, only because of my decision to attend The Charge. The Charge is an incredibly beneficial Delt experience for any member that demands you to be selfish in your endeavors to grow as a Delt, as a leader, and as a man. Following a moving election speech, fraternity presidents at the University of Oregon elected Chase Salazar '15 their Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC) President for the 2013-2014 term year. Chase has and continues to be an excellent representative of Delta Tau Delta and Delts look forward to Chase representing UO Greeks campus-wide. The next year is sure to present Chase with many challenges, but he's well prepared and every member of Delta Tau Delta is excited to support his endeavors. Congratulations, Chase!
